The Longest Yard (2005)

Director: Peter Segal

Stars: Adam Sandler, Burt Reynolds, and Chris Rock

Summary:  A former NFL star now prison inmate is given the challenge by the prison warden to form a football team full of inmates to play in a nationally televised game against prison guards.

My Review: Classic but a goodie. Really enjoyed this movie back when I first watched it in 2005 and I still enjoy watching it now. Adam Sandler plays the perfect role of someone who is able to bring a team of rough inmates together through the bond of hatred they have for the guards. If you love the story of underdog look no further than this movie. If the adversity the inmates have faced throughout their lives isn’t enough already, the guards try to break up the bond forming in the team through dirty acts. The best parts of the movie are seeing how the team of inmates constantly respond to the guard’s corruption and abuse of their power. Would recommend this film to any sports lover especially those who enjoy American football.

My Rating: 8/10

Entourage Movie

Director: Doug Ellin

Stars: Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, and Jerry Ferrara

Summary: Movie star Vincent Chase, together with his boys Eric, Turtle, and Johnny, are back – and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold on a risky project that will serve as Vince’s directorial debut.

My Review: This movie is a continuation on from the extremely successful television series of Entourage. This movie will only make sense to viewers if you have seen the television series. Of course the directors and actors all proclaim that you definitely ‘can watch the movie without any prior knowledge of the television series and still understand it’. In my opinion it’s vital for you to watch the TV series otherwise I wouldn’t bother watching the film. The TV series was much better than this movie. I didn’t enjoy this movie at all with the focus being placed way too heavily on cameo appearances from real life celebrities and sports stars rather than the film itself. Would only recommend the movie to those who have seen the TV series and even then I would hope you wouldn’t be as disappointed in the movie as I am.

Fight Club (1999)

*CONTAIN SPOILERS*

Director: David Fincher
Stars: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meat Loaf and Helena Bonham

Summary:
An insomniac office worker, looking for a way to change his life, attends support groups in attempts to subdue his emotional state. After meeting a soap manufacturer, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), he is dragged into an underground fight club that spirals out of control and evolves into something much more. The narrator and Tyler bond through the violence, a strange situation becomes complicated when Tyler becomes involved with Marla (Helena Bonham) who too, artificially attends support groups to help her continue with life. Engaging in competitive rivalry for love and power the narrator learns more about his so-called 'friend', Tyler.

My Review:
The famous Chuck Palahniuk' book, 'Fight Club' was created as film very successfully. The acting was solid, believable and very very entertaining. The way the film was directed definitely grasped the audiences' attention by representing the relateable desperate cry of the modern consumerist. Similarly to American Beauty, the film displays a mind-bending message about society and the philosophy behind consumerism and self-deterioration. *The twisted plot gives first time viewers unpredictability considering Tyler is actually the narrator. Thus, emphasising that the fights that he is pursuing are not always physical but in this case mental. The movie was dramatic as well as humorous. 100% Recommend!

Deadpool

Director: Tim Miller

Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, and T.J. Miller

Summary: A former Special forces operative turner mercenary is subjected to a rogue experiment that leave him with accelerated healing powers, adopting the alter ego Deadpool.

My Review: This movie is high up on my list of the best movies I have seen in 2016. Ryan Reynolds is perfect for this role and you get the feeling that if it was anyone else that the movie wouldn’t be quite the same. The comedy is easily the best part of the film and it really gets good once Ryan acquires unhuman like power. Usually those superhero movies (Spiderman / Batman) have characters that are very serious and are strictly about doing the best they can to save the world whenever danger is present. Well unlike most of these superheros Deadpool doesn’t take it as serious and yet still does the job similar to a Spiderman or Batman if not better. The refreshing nature of having a superhero that doesn’t take him self to serious and can make the audience laugh was great. Would recommend this movie to any and everyone as this movie is bound to make you laugh.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008)

Director: Dennis Dugan

Stars: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, and Emmanuelle Chriqui

Summary: An Israeli Special Forces Solider (Adam Sandler) fakes his death so he can re-emerge in New York as a hair stylist. When an enemy of Zohan’s during his time in the military is also in New York, Zohan must do his best to avoid him in case of a potential showdown.

My Review: This Action comedy was a movie that actually had me laughing very often. Adam Sandler is a favourite actor of mine so maybe the bias kicks in here. Although the movie isn’t full of great actors and the story line is very simplistic, many critics have rated this movie poorly. The movie for me got very enjoyable once Zohan (Adam Sandler) proved his worth at a hair salon and got a job. The hair salon attracted record customers with even huge lines starting at the front door heading back down the street before the salon had even opened. This was due to Zohan’s full service of not only giving you a great haircut but taking care of any sexual desires you had as well. If you enjoy good and unsuspecting humour like me, then I’d thoroughly recommend this movie to you.

Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)

Director: P.J. Hogan
Stars: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy and Krysten Ritter

Summary:
After Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher), a journalist and compulsive liar who has an addiction with shopping, loses her income source, she unintentionally lands a job writing for financial magazine. She then writes a column called 'The Girl in the Green Scarf' using simple language that could be understood by common people describing shopping and somewhat linking her to addiction to spending. Meanwhile, her debt collector is chasing her and she falls for a wealthy entrepreneur who is her manager at the financial magazine she works for.

My Review:
This movie was a cliche and safe romantic comedy which I found was enjoyable. Although as a female I can't relate to this film, Isla Fisher makes the character appealing and has a great ability to do comedy. The script was cheesy, yet adorable and is a perfect choice if you're looking for something not too cringe worthy. If you love romantic comedies and cliches, you will enjoy this film!

Captain America Civil War

Director: Joe Russo and Anthony RussoStars: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Tom Holland, Frank Grillo, William Hurt and Daniel Brühl.

Summary:
Captain America: Civil War is a 2016 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Captain America, produced by Marvel Studiosand distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the thirteenth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and features an ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Tom Holland, Frank Grillo, William Hurt and Daniel Brühl. In Captain America: Civil War, disagreement over international oversight of theAvengers fractures them into opposing factions – one led by Steve Rogers and the other by Tony Stark.

My Review:
-A ton of glorious and satisfying action from a movie filled with superheroes.
-A somewhat deep story in which you understand the motivations of each character.
-Successful introduction of two new characters to the MCU roster: Spiderman and Black Panther. They were very epic in the movie, I found.
-A reaction to that question we constantly ask during these actions movies: "How are they superheroes if they destroy more than they save?".
To me, the only con to this film is that it is more than a film which rests on itself, as it instead rests on the many movies that came before it. In other words, if you have not seen the previous Capt. America and Avenger movies, you probably won't understand what the hell is going on. It doesn't really have a concise beginning and end, it stands as a development of the characters we already love.
If you have watched previous MCU movies, this is a must-see!
To me, Marvel movies cannot get any better than this!

Burnt (2015)

Director: John Wells
Stars: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and Daniel Bruhl

Summary:
Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) is a former chef who had a perfect career in the restaurant industry earning himself two Michelin stars and a high-end image. He then destroyed this career with drugs and negligent behaviour. The brilliant yet troubled chef then cleaned up his act and returns to London to redeem himself by leaving his bad habits behind and lading his own kitchen to earn another exclusive Michelin Star. On the way he meets Helene (Sienna Miller) who he falls for. Burnt has a bit of comedy but is mostly an emotional and dramatic story about the creation of food, love and the power of second chances.

My Review:
In some scenes the acting was performed really well and seemed incredibly realistic but in other parts, you could tell the script was flawed and it was hard to feel any emotions for the characters. Especially at the beginning, I really had no clue what was happening and the character development was done poorly and rushed. The film was quite good at recreating the culinary intensity of cooking and displaying cliche after cliche. I wasn't really a big fan of the film but I can see why food fanatics may enjoy it. It's a movie that you watch and never really mention again...

My Rating: 6/10

American Beauty (1999)

Director: Sam Mendes
Stars: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening and Thora Birch

Summary:
American Beauty records a suburban father, Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) during his mid-life crisis. On the outside, his family is made up of the typical American dream. That is, a perfect house, husband, wife, child and car. However, Lesters' family consists of a bitchy wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening) and a daughter who hates him, Jane (Thora Birch). After attending a cheer leading competition at Jane's high school, he meets Jane's friend Angela, who causes him to develop a sexual infatuation for and acts as a catalyst for his freedom from years of falling into a depression. The film is a dark comedic drama that threads together emotional conflicts regarding each member of the Burnham family and misunderstandings that lead to the discovery of oneself.

My Review:
Although the film can be seen as a comedy, I found that it could also been seen as a tragedy because of the subsidiarity of Lester's identity. The film was not a typical comedy that can be taken lightly. American Beauty uncovers the reality of the so-called 'American Dream' that is is not all happiness but superficiality that may be inhuman for societies standards. It highlights the way society can change a person to the point that they may not be themselves or feel happy even when they are successful in ticking the boxes of societies expectations. I loved the performances of the actors and how well they played their characters making the scenes so believable and a joy to watch. Mendes directs a deeply disturbing, yet humorous and highly sophisticated film that I would recommend to anyone that enjoys cutting edge and entertainingly intelligent movies.
